Forklift Requirements

To operate a forklift truck you need to be of school leaving age or above. For use on the public highway a full driving licence is required and the driver must be of age 17 years or above. In addition the fork truck must comply with any relevant construction and use regulations relevant to driving on the public highway. Forklift operators must receive adequate training which should be carried out by an accredited trainer. Ideally, the training should be broken down into several stages and should initially not be carried out in a real work situation. Training should include the following elements:

Once fork truck operator has been assessed as being fully competent, the employer should provide ongoing assessment and training. Training records for each forklift operator should also be kept and updated regularly.
